Reasons Why We’re Thankful For Camp

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and is the best time for us to reflect what we’re thankful for. When your child is sitting around the Thanksgiving table next week, we bet that they will give thanks for the opportunity to go to summer camp! While it may be cold out now and camp is months away, camp provides an array of benefits that will positively impact your child on a daily basis. Here are some reasons to be thankful for camp:

The Opportunity to Try New Things
From facing their fears of swimming in a lake to trying new sports and activities, Camp Tioga provides kids the opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone. The People
Connections made at camp are incredibly strong. Camp introduces children and staff to people from all different places and walks of life, who leave a lasting impression on us. Campers are forever changed by these meetings, often carrying these friendships throughout their lifetime.

The Lifelong Benefits
You’ve heard us talk about the benefits of camp time and time again, but it is only because they are just so great! Confidence building, self-esteem developing and learning to be agile are all priceless benefits of attending camp--not to mention, new found independence and learning survival skills too!

The Fun
Ok, we all know by now that camp is an inspiring, positive experience. But beyond all that, it’s also a total blast! Making s’mores by the campfire, swimming, hiking,  dancing, making music, making art, making friends and off-camp trips are just some of the ways we have fun at Camp Tioga!

November Is National Child Mental Health Awareness Month: Here's How Camp Helps Kids Mentally

November is Child Mental Health Awareness Month. In honor of this month, it’s important to recognize any issues your child might be having or to open up the conversation about kids and mental health. Did you know that sending your child to summer camp can do wonders for their self esteem, confidence and mental health? Let us tell you how:

Resiliency Gives Kids Encouragement
Children who attend summer camp gain a sense of resiliency when they face new challenges like learning how to build a fire or climb a high mountain.  At camp, they will experience a nurturing environment where children are encouraged to take safe risks and learn from them whether they succeed or fail.
Confidence Helps Children Overcome Challenges
Summer camp can do wonders for a child’s self-esteem. At camp, they learn a "can-do" attitude, which is a trait many parents want to instill in their kids. Summer camps provide plenty of opportunities for kids to face new challenges and build their self-confidence through the daily achievements they make.
Independence Builds Character In Children
Children can learn how to do things for themselves at camp without their parents supervising them. They learn to become self-reliant, taking care of their every day personal needs. That helps them feel that a sense of responsibility has been delegated to them, making them feel important and good about themselves.
These are just a few ways that camp can help your child feel great about themselves. At Camp Tioga, your child will also learn the importance of developing social skills and making friends, which impacts a child’s mental health greatly. For information on how Camp Tioga can help your child develop socially and emotionally, visit our website or give us a call at 516.938.0894.

Halloween Safety Tips For Kids

Halloween is right around the corner, and while most people love a good scare, it shouldn’t be at the expense of child safety. Parents can take several easy and effective precautions to make sure that their children are safe while trick or treating. Keep your children free from harm while on the hunt for sweets, with these Halloween safety tips:

Make Sure To Walk Safely

  • Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks, and make sure to look all around before crossing.
  • Avoid electronic distractions, and keep your head up when walking or crossing the street.
  • Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, make sure to walk facing traffic and always make eye contacts with drivers before crossing in front of them.
  • Watch for cars that are turning and backing up. Teach your children to never walk between parked cars in the event they start to move.
Accompany Your Children
  • It’s important that children are accompanied by an adult while trick or treating, especially if they are under the age of 12. If your children are old enough to go alone, make sure they stick to a group of friends and stay in familiar areas only.
  • Costumes should be safe. Make sure their candy bags or costumes have reflective tape or are in light colors, as it gets darker earlier during Halloween.
  • When possible, opt for face paint instead of masks, which can obstruct your child’s vision.
  • You and your child should carry glowsticks and flashlights when trick or treating in the dark to avoid any injuries and make yourself noticeable by drivers.
  • Be sure your child’s costume is the right size to avoid them tripping and falling.

Life Lessons Learned At Sleepaway Camp

We all know that sleepaway camp is fun and games, but did you know that it provides real long-lasting benefits to the children that attend it? If you ask anyone who attended camp no matter how long ago it was, they’ll be able to recall a ton of memories in which their life was enriched from it. Here are some life lessons that your child can be sure to take away from camp:

Build Relationships:
Friendships made at sleep away camp are some of the best friendships ever. Camp teaches your kids  to meet people in a unique setting in which they really get to know one another. Your children are exposed to people from all walks of life, that they would normally not have any contact with and many times close friendships form out of that experience.
Gain Confidence:
Has your child ever tried a new sport or activity, and realized they were not only good at it but enjoyed it too? That happens at camp every single day. Campers are encouraged to try new things, thus filling them with a sense of confidence and belief in themselves. It’s amazing to see the transformation in a child’s self-esteem after a summer at sleepaway camp. That willingness to try new things will only benefit them in life later on.
Embrace Diversity:
Camp is full of people who are different from your child--and that’s a great thing! Being introduced to a diverse array of people is a great life experience for them. Counselors come from across the pond, campers come from small towns of 100 and big cities of millions, and that’s the beauty of it. Your children will meet kids from other religious backgrounds and varying socioeconomic backgrounds where stories will be shared, new foods will be introduced and they will learn how all people deserve respect, kindness, acceptance and sensitivity.

Are you thinking of sending your son or daughter to sleepaway camp next year? Let them experience all of the greatness that Camp Tioga has to offer. Our superior staff, picturesque grounds and the array of activities we offer will be the perfect fit for any child.  To learn more about Camp Tioga , visit our website or call 570.756.2660 for more information.

Is Your Child Ready For Sleepaway Camp?

For a parent, tossing around the idea of sending your child to sleepaway camp can be daunting. Overnight camp has so many wonderful benefits and advantages, but how do you know when your child is ready to go?

They ask about it: Kids, themselves,  are the best judges of when they are ready to go to camp. Sometimes they show a spontaneous interest in camp on their own, and other times it’s sparked by seeing their older siblings or friends having a blast at camp. Either way, talking to your child about the benefits of camp and how serious they are about going will provide you with the best insight on if they’re ready!

They exhibit certain behavior: Kids who are relatively self reliant, confident and adaptable to new surroundings usually fare well at summer camp. If they’ve been away on school trips, or even stayed for a prolonged period of time away from home, they should be a happy camper.

Consider the length of session: The typical sleepaway camp session runs anywhere between 4-8 weeks. For children who are on the younger end or for kids who are experiencing camp for the first time, a shorter session might be a great way for your child to get their feet wet and ease into going away. Some camps offer a one week starter session, with the option of tacking on additional weeks.

Are you looking for a sleepaway camp for this summer? The solution is simple: choose Camp Tioga! Located in the incredible endless mountain region of Pennsylvania, our state-of the-art campus is built on 110 scenic acres, with panoramic views reaching over 40 miles. To enroll now, visit us here or call 516.543.6521.

Tips for Sending Your Child to Overnight Camp For the First Time

We know the never-ending benefits of sending your child to overnight camp--the increased self confidence, building long lasting friendships and developing independence. But for a child who is off to camp for the first time this summer, it can seem overwhelming, and dare we say it, even scary! But fear not! We’re here to ease your child’s fears with these tips to help them realize that camp is going to be one of the best experiences of their lives.

It’s All In The Approach: When speaking to your child, don’t talk about camp as being “4 weeks away from home,” but rather “a summer full of adventures and new friendships!”

Visit The Camp: Scheduling a tour ahead of time to explore the facilities and meet the camp staff is a great way to familiarize your child with their new summer home. This will help them feel more comfortable as they’ll be able to visualize themselves there.

Talk About It: During the months leading up to camp, it’s helpful to talk about what they can expect this summer.  Mentioning things like sleepovers in the cabin and meeting new people  are both positive topics that will get your child excited about their new adventure.

Surf The Web: Exploring the camp’s website is a great way to have a virtual experience, especially if there are videos or interactive maps of the grounds. Seeing pictures of other campers having fun, or an activity calendar for the summer ahead is helpful in building enthusiasm.

Acknowledge Their Concerns: Ask your child positive questions, such as, “what activity are you most excited about?” or “what do you think your counselors will be like?” This will hopefully spark a conversation between you and your child, bringing up any concerns they may have. Let them know you are listening, which should redirect their concerns and minimize their apprehension.

We want your child to know that camp is fun! With a camper to staff ratio of  3 to 1, Camp Tioga is composed of carefully selected experienced and caring individuals who make sure that each child feels welcome and comfortable. To learn more about Camp Tioga, visit us on Facebook or Twitter.

How Children Improve Their Social Skills At Camp

Some children go to camp to improve a certain skill or master a new sport. Did you know that attending summer camp can also improve a child's social skills? It's true! Keep reading to learn more.

New Friendships
Some children may feel ostracized at school because they do not interact with their classmates. At camp, there are no cliques. Instead, campers are encouraged to make friends and form new bonds. In the end, this will only help them have better social skills.

Working Well With Others
In school, students are focused on their own performance and grades. While individual success is important, it does not teach them how to work well with others. At Camp Tioga, we offer plenty of team building activities that teach campers how to be team players.

Social Intelligence
People from all over the world spend their summers at Camp Tioga. Children will be exposed to a melting pot of different cultures and personalities. They will develop social intelligence and learn how to interact with new people.

Want your children to grow and develop this summer? If so, sign them up for sleepaway camp. At Camp Tioga, your child can continue to develop their social skills. For an in-depth look at what Camp Tioga has to offer, take a look at our website or call 516-938-0894 for more information.
