Why Kids Need To Unplug From Technology

With the technology we have at our fingertips, children can miss out on experiences and real life connections to others. Camp is a place where children can put the smartphones down and learn to connect to others and with nature.

The children of today spend an average of almost eight hours per day using technology, according to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation. That’s more than 50 hours a week!  At camp, children can unplug from the cyber-world and focus solely on building real life relationships. Doing this can make one more personable and open to trying new experiences. This is a great life skill to have for later in life in the workplace.

Camp is one of the few places left where a child can fully unplug from technology. Most camps have strict policies regarding what is allowed at camp. Video games, cell phones, laptops, tablets, and any Wi-Fi enabled devices are usually banned from the premises. The only items most camps do allow are e-readers, without internet capabilities, and mp3 players, without video capabilities.

Initially, children might be opposed to not having electronics, but with time they will realize they can have fun without them. It is important for children to learn how to interact with others in the real world. Are you searching for a place to help your child unplug next summer? Look no further than Camp Tioga!
