Why Kids Need To Unplug From Technology

With the technology we have at our fingertips, children can miss out on experiences and real life connections to others. Camp is a place where children can put the smartphones down and learn to connect to others and with nature.

The children of today spend an average of almost eight hours per day using technology, according to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation. That’s more than 50 hours a week!  At camp, children can unplug from the cyber-world and focus solely on building real life relationships. Doing this can make one more personable and open to trying new experiences. This is a great life skill to have for later in life in the workplace.

Camp is one of the few places left where a child can fully unplug from technology. Most camps have strict policies regarding what is allowed at camp. Video games, cell phones, laptops, tablets, and any Wi-Fi enabled devices are usually banned from the premises. The only items most camps do allow are e-readers, without internet capabilities, and mp3 players, without video capabilities.

Initially, children might be opposed to not having electronics, but with time they will realize they can have fun without them. It is important for children to learn how to interact with others in the real world. Are you searching for a place to help your child unplug next summer? Look no further than Camp Tioga! We are confident that by the end of camp, your child will have new friends and memories that will last them a lifetime. Why Your Child Needs Camp

Summertime is here and that means your children are on a two month vacation with nothing to do. The amount of free time your kids have seems almost unlimited during this period. Going to a summer camp is always a great way for your child to spend their summer. Here are just a few reasons on why your child should go to camp.

  1. Unplug and Recharge: Research shows that children spend roughly a third of their day engulfed in electronics. While you can interact with friends and family via social media and messaging applications, the aspect of human interaction is not there. A lack of human interaction can stunt the growth of a child’s social development. Most summer camps do not permit the use of electronics which allow children to engage in more face-to-face interactions.
  2. Life Skills and Success: Some life skills are not learned in the classroom. Camp offers children the opportunity to build these life skills to coincide with their new found knowledge. Some life skills needed to be successful in today’s world include oral communication, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, social skills and leadership.
  3. Playing is Important: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reports that it is very important for children to have an unstructured and free play time. This type of play is needed to help children develop with their social and emotional development. Summer camps do have certain activities planned for each day, but still allow a lot of time for this type of play.
  4. Autonomy: Learning and gaining new life skills is very important, but a person needs to accomplish this while being independent of others. Children sometimes need to be separated from their parents so they can learn how to do things on their own. Nothing is more important than allowing a child to make their own decisions. Doing this allows them to learn from their actions and become self-reliant.

Children that learn these life skills have a better chance at becoming a successful adult. Allowing your child to keep developing while not in the classroom each summer is important. A great way to allow children to keep developing is to sign them up for summer camp. At Camp Tioga, your child can continue to grow as a person while also still having fun on their summer break.
