Life Lessons Learned At Camp

Camp may be over, but the life lessons your children take away from it sure aren’t. We’ve mentioned time and time again, that summer camp is much more than just fun and games--but don’t just take it from us! According to a recent study, camp proves to be a setting for positive youth development where invaluable life skills are acquired and nurtured. If you’re considering sending your children to camp next summer, don’t think twice! It will be an investment into their self esteem, leadership skills, confidence and independence--just to name a few. Here are four critical life skills that get a huge boost at summer camp:

How To Get Along With Others: Camp not only introduces children to people from all walks of life, but it actually teaches them tolerance and acceptance of everyone as well. Ask any camp alumni and they will tell you about the lifelong and meaningful friendships that camp has given them over the years.

How To Overcome Challenges: Children nowadays are thought of as the “bubble-wrapped” generation. Since the world is over saturated with social media, news and crime, parents today are very overprotective of their children. Camp allows them to come to a place that is safe, where your kids can step outside of their comfort zone and try new things. Since camp is a place that is nurturing and supportive, it’s a great setting for your child to try something new--even if they fail! Camp helps them recognize their limitations and sees these as things that can be improved upon.

How To Get Fit: Since only one in four children get the recommended one hour of physical activity daily, camp is a great way to teach your children about the benefits of staying active and healthy. Since Camp Tioga, like most camps, are a tech-free zone, that break from technology allows kids to focus more on engaging in lots of fun physical activity and spending time outdoors. Setting a healthy routine from a young age will get them in the habit of leading an active lifestyle later on.

How To Be A Leader: The qualities that are often embodied by a good leader are confidence, creativity in their decision making and an understanding of teamwork.. It takes practice to become a good leader, and camp gives them that practice and the tools they need to succeed. You often have to rely on your teammates or cabin mates to complete an activity, which builds in-group bonding. Within that process, a campers ability to take charge and lead the group is often formed. Most campers demonstrate an increase in emotional intelligence and self confidence, which are characteristics attributed to a great leader.

4 Ways to Help Your Child Transition Home From Camp

Camp is over for the summer! Cue the sad music and break out the tissues--we’re just as sad as your kids are. After having one of the best summers of their lives, it can often be hard for kids to return home and get used to living their normal life again. Camp gives them freedom and the opportunity to learn, grow, make friends and try lots of new things, so it’s no surprise that coming home can certainly be an adjustment. Help ease your child back into everyday life with these tips:

Continue their freedom:
After spending weeks away from home where your kids have a taste of freedom, continue the freedom at home by giving them options and making them part of their decision making process--even if it’s limited. Allowing them to choose what they want to wear, eat or when they sleep within reason will help make the transition home a little smoother.

Plug-in slowly:
Since camp is a tech-free zone, this is the perfect opportunity for your child to ease back into using their phones, laptops and social media slowly. Hopefully their tech detox made them realize that they don’t need to rely on these things to have fun. Limiting their time with their electronic devices will ensure they don’t experience tech shock and become overwhelmed when plugging back in.

Be a good listener:
Your child will want to share all of their memories, stories and experiences from camp with you! Make sure you are there to listen to them and understand the joy that they felt. Encourage them to continue to sing camp songs and wear their camp shirts around the house. Living away for the whole summer comes complete with personal growth and learning life lessons. Remind your child that you missed them but are so proud of how they developed this new sense of independence and maturity. Showing encouragement and support will ensure that they open up to you about other things in the future.

Leave the “camp” in camper:
Encourage your child to look at their camp photos on the website, allow them read the camp blog, and schedule play dates and sleepovers with their camp friends periodically. Incorporating camp traditions into their daily lives is another great way for them to always keep a piece of camp with them as they continue on their normal daily activities. Most importantly, remind them that Tioga 17 will be here before we know it and we will be ready to have another amazing summer full of the best memories ever!

Safety At Camp Tioga

Here at Camp Tioga, we take safety very seriously! Sure, we love to have fun, but not at the expense of someone possibly getting hurt. Parents can rest assured knowing that safety is our first and foremost priority. Here are reasons why parents can entrust their children to us:

Our Camper To Counselor Ratio:
At Camp Tioga, we provide a camper to counselor ratio of 3:1. Campers live in bunks with their counselors who provide constant supervision. Every child is accounted for at all times.

Medical Staff:
Our highly trained, caring medical staff is on duty at all times. We have four licensed RN’s, a camp doctor, in addition to our employees being fully trained in First-Aid and CPR. Our infirmary is always stocked with all necessary medications and medical supplies, including oxygen and automatic external defibrillators. We are also a completely nut-free facility, so parents of children with nut allergies need not worry! Our medical staff personally contacts each family that joins us prior to the summer, and familiarizes themselves with the medical history of every camper.

Safety Rating:
Our camp earned the rating of “ One of the Safest Camps in America” by the A.M Skier Agency. We exhibit a commitment to safety where our incredible staff is always on top of our campers.
